Description of Talk: Maximus the Confessor is considered the architect of the Byzantine theological vision. His most creative thinking comes through conversation with Gregory Nazianzus, the subject of Maximus’ Ambigua. We will take a look at how Maximus reads Gregory’s classic Five Theological Orations and what the practice of Maximus’ commentary can teach us about reading the fathers today.

Speaker Biography: Fr. Andrew Summerson is an Assistant Professor of Greek Patristics and Eastern Christian Studies at the Sheptytsky Institute in the University of St. Michael's College. He holds a doctorate in Patristic Theology from the Pontifical Patristic Institute, "Augustinianum". He is the author of Divine Scripture and Human Emotion in Maximus the Confessor (Brill 2021) and numerous articles.
