In collaboration with the Archdiocese of Toronto’s St. Monica Institute and the Toronto Catholic Teachers’ Guild, we are pleased to offer this Lenten retreat day for Catholic educators: Catholic teachers, administrators, homeschoolers, and all friends of Catholic education.
Teaching is a vocation that brings with it tremendous challenges. The Salesians of Don Bosco often pointed out that teachers of youth need not practice acts of mortification – teaching young people is mortification enough! Amusing as that is, what teacher would doubt it?
The community of Catholic education encompasses many roles, but at the heart of it all is that "moment of teaching”. Its challenges are not the challenges of teachers alone, but necessarily become challenges for the community of Catholic educators more broadly - be they administrators, home-schoolers, or resource and support staff.
Much of the stress in teaching is rooted in the attitudes that teachers and administrators bring to the classroom or school. This retreat will offer a chance to reflect on some fundamentals of the spirituality of that core vocation of education - the Catholic teacher - in the hope of renewing the vocation of Catholic education and making teaching itself more meaningful and manageable.
