A Gift from our Ordinandi Class of 2021
The Ordinandi Class of 2021 graciously re-plated in gold the chalice of Bishop McEvay and a set of cruets for the water and wine for Mass.
The chalice of Bishop McEvay had been missing and was found in a box in the sacristy of St. John's Chapel at Cardinal Newman High School. The chalice and cruets are now kept in the vault of the Seminary sacristy with the other sacred vessels, and they are only used on very special occasions.
The McEvay chalice is a very important vessel which is significant to the patrimony of the Archdiocese of Toronto and the Seminary.
On April 13, 1908, McEvay was appointed Archbishop of Toronto. While archbishop, he accomplished much for his diocese and the Church in Canada. Seven new parishes were established, and ten new church buildings were constructed. Archbishop McEvay also founded the Canadian Catholic Church Extension Society (now Catholic Missions in Canada).
Arguably one of His Grace's most notable achievements was the establishment of St. Augustine's Seminary. The cornerstone was laid and blessed by Archbishop McEvay on October 23, 1910. Unfortunately, he did not live to see it completed. Suffering from a blood disease since his arrival in Toronto, Archbishop McEvay finally succumbed to this illness on May 10, 1911. His body was interred in Regina Cleri Cemetery at St. Augustine's Seminary. Source: Archdiocese of Toronto website.
Thank you to the 2021 Ordinandi who, with God’s grace, will be ordained soon to the priesthood!
