Diploma in Philosophy
The Diploma in Philosophy consists of ten philosophy courses. This two-semester Diploma is designed to fulfill the philosophy requirements outlined in Veritatis Gaudium for the study of theology. This diploma is part of a two-year pre-theology program for ordination candidates and can also be taken by lay students as a terminal program. Courses are offered in-person and synchronously online to allow students throughout Canada and internationally to benefit from these course offerings. For those not in the ordination stream, this diploma program may be done on a part-time or full-time basis.
The Diploma in Philosophy is a non-conjoint program that will be granted by St. Augustine’s Seminary of Toronto, Ecclesiastical Faculty of Theology.
The ten philosophy courses are:
Ancient Philosophy
Logic and the Philosophy of Language
Philosophical Anthropology
Philosophy of Nature and Natural Theology
Modern Philosophy
Contemporary Philosophy
Medieval/Scholastic Philosophy
Metaphysics
Epistemology/Philosophy of Knowledge
Moral and Political Philosophy
Admissions Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree or non-traditional applicant with an appropriate background.
2. Complete academic application and official transcripts from all post-secondary education [as noted in the Academic Admissions page].
Cases that involve Advanced Standing, Shared Credits, or Transfer Credits are dealt with according to the regulations found in the SAS Bulletin, the SAS Website, and the TST Basic Degree Handbook.
Courses completed in the diploma program may be eligible for transfer to a degree program depending on the academic eligibility of the student and the grade received for the course. Please review article 11.9 of the TST Basic Degree Handbook which further explains the policy regarding grades earned in the 60-69 range. Courses receiving these grades are counted towards our diploma programs but are not transferable to a master’s level program.
