St. Augustine’s Seminary Remembers Dr. Janine Langan
A memorial event, including a Mass, was held on Saturday, August 19, at St. Augustine’s Seminary in honour of Professor Emerita Janine Langan.
The event was attended by numerous friends, colleagues, and former students who remembered Dr. Langan as a woman deeply devoted to her faith, family, academics, and students.
Fr. Robert Barringer, the former President of St. Augustine’s Seminary, presided.
Throughout the years, Professor Emerita Janine Langan received numerous honours. In 2006, she and her husband Thomas were bestowed with papal honours in recognition of their contributions to the Church. She was also named a Lady of St. Sylvester for her work in the Christianity & Culture Program, as well as for her adjunct role at St. Augustine’s Seminary.
Dr. Langan is widely acknowledged for her pioneering Christianity and Culture (C&C) program, established in 1979 at the University of Toronto's St. Michael's College. The courses offered under this program ranged from "The Christian Imagination" to "Christianity and Asia." Dr. Langan's aim was to illuminate the meaning of the word "church" for both Catholics and non-Catholics. “Her influence extends across an entire generation of university students, including those who have become faculty members, priests, seminarians, founders of Catholic schools, educators, and accomplished professionals,” Fr. Frederick Chung, Associate Professor of Biblical Theology (Old Testament) and Director of Propaedeutic Formation/Spiritual Year.
