On Wednesday, October 22, 2008, St. Augustine's Seminary hosted Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev, the Russian Orthodox Bishop of Vienna, Austria. Joining us was The Very Rev. Constantine Sariapis, Professor of Pastoral Theology at the Greek Orthodox Theological Academy of Toronto, along with a number of students from the Academy. Bishop Hilarion spoke about the Orthodox tradition's approach to prayer and spirituality. He also took much time in responding to questions concerning the relations between the Eastern Church and Western Church. His visit was part of a week-long ecumenical initiative that was organized by Rev. Damian MacPherson, SA, the Director for the Ecumenical and Interfaith Affairs for the Archdiocese of Toronto and Dr. Mary Morrocco. The week culminated in St. Michael's Choir School's choral presentation of the Passion According to St. Matthew which was composed by Archbishop Hilarion.

We were fortunate to have His Grace, the Right Reverend Bishop Kallistos Ware of Diokleia, auxiliary bishop of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Great Britain here in Toronto last week. Bishop Kallistos was Spalding Lecturer of Eastern Orthodox Studies at Oxford University (1966-2001), and the author of numerous books and articles pertaining to the Orthodox Christian faith. He gave a lecture on “The Transfiguration of Christ and the Suffering of the World” at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church on March 18, 2007. He also gave a lecture at St. Augustine’s Seminary on the topic of the priesthood in Greek Orthodox tradition on March 21, 2007.
On January 17, 2007, in anticipation of the “Week for Christian Unity”, Wycliffe College joined us at St. Augustine’s Seminary for a conference given by Professor Rabbi David Novak, followed by vespers preached by Wycliffe’s own Professor Joseph Mangina. The event concluded with a fellowship supper. We welcomed approximately thirty-five students and Faculty, including Professor Alan Hayes, the newly appointed Director of the Toronto School of Theology. The event encouraged all present to work toward building a society that respects the values that all three communities share, based upon their common faith heritage.
